Using Fiber in Interior Design
Since the early history of mankind, Fiber has been collected and used for different purposes. They are twisted, braided, and woven into rugs, carpets, mats, and even clothing.
Fibers make great material for insulation, especially during summer. They can also be flame-resistant and thermoregulating – others can cleanse and purify the air in your indoor environment.
Two Kinds of Fiber used in Interior Design
Natural Fiber – is made from natural materials that come from plants, animals, or minerals. Silk and wool are considered to be animal-based fibers while cotton, linen, and jute are plant-based. These raw materials are spun into threads and yarns and then woven into natural fabric.
Synthetic Fiber – is usually formed through chemical processes. These fibers are extracted during the process using a spinneret, a device that takes polymers to form fibers.
The advantages of Natural and Synthetic Fibers
Natural Fibers are absorbent, eco-friendly, and durable.
Because fibers in both plants and animals have a strong affinity for water, natural fibers have an incredibly high absorbency rate. This makes them a perfect option for bed sheets and towels since they are regularly used to dry surfaces.
Aside from the structure of cellulose in most natural fibers being very strong, they are also great for the environment. Extracting does not include as many chemicals as you would need in producing synthetic fiber however, some natural materials require more water than normal making them less eco-friendly than others.
While natural fibers are a little bit more on the expensive side, synthetic fibers provide a cheaper alternative. They tend to be more stain-resistant which makes them great for daily wear and use.
If being water-resistant comes naturally to natural fibers, synthetic fibers can be designed to be waterproof and water-resistant. They are also made to imitate how natural fibers look so aesthetics-wise, you won’t have a problem.
