Get your homes ready for summer in Dubai
With winter coming to an end, residents are preparing for the onslaught of summer in Dubai. With temperatures reaching 51°C, most people prefer to stay indoors – in our homes, offices, shopping malls, restaurants, or in any air-conditioned place to keep us feeling cool and comfortable.
One of the places we tend to stay longer is our house – especially with how the pandemic has affected the whole world. That’s why we do our best to ready our homes for the Dubai heat!
Whether you’re living in an apartment, villa, or townhouse in Dubai, these tips will give you an idea of how to get your homes ready for summer in Dubai!
Tips on how to get your homes ready for summer in Dubai
Insulation
If you’re on a budget, good insulation can keep the heat out of your home. Replace your windows with double-pane glass or apply a window tint to reflect sunlight.
Moreover, if you’re planning to purchase a property in Dubai, make sure to check the windows and identify their type as it may affect your comfort as well as the house’s ventilation during summer.
Regularly clean your Air Conditioner
AC consumption typically gets higher during the summer that’s why you need to make sure they are well maintained.
In areas like Business Bay, Downtown, JLT, and Dubai Marina, most buildings are centralized. It is advisable for these types of cooling systems to be checked once every two months.
Keep your home sealed
To avoid the heat coming on or the cold air getting out, use a waterproof sealant on your doors and windows. These can help seal all gaps and preserve the cold air inside your homes, especially during the afternoon when the Dubai summer heat is at its peak.
Keep it white and light
Use light-colored blankets and pillowcases and natural fibers like cotton or linen to draw moisture off the body. White and lighter colors do not absorb sunlight while also creating a feeling of airy and wide.
Home plants
If you live in a villa in Dubai, one of the best ways to keep your surroundings cool is to plant trees and shrubs. Villas in Mudon, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Parks, and Dubai Hills usually offer landscaped gardens and properly positioned trees to minimize outdoor heat.
However, if you live in an apartment, you can opt for indoor plants like aloe Vera, bonsais, and cacti to name a few.
Apartment gardens for summer in Dubai
Shade, shade, shade
To protect your plants from the sun, shade cloth or a canopy can do the job. You can also move your indoor plants to a less sunny spot on your balcony or garden. You can also add pebbles on top of the soil to reduce evaporation.
Water carefully
Watering plants during the harsh daytime sunlight can cause evaporation and dry them up faster. To avoid this, water your plants during cooler times of the day like early morning and evenings.
Make changes fit for the summer
An organic fertilizer that contains seaweed extract can protect plants from drought. Adding mulch to your soil can also lock in the moisture. Some of these are bark chips which can easily be found at any gardening store.
Consider also planting flowers and plants that thrive during summer like succulents and other desert plants.
